It starts in Parma, then it will be Modena, Carpi, Ravenna, Cattolica and Bologna's turn

Starting in early October, the RU486 pill will begin to be distributed in Parma’s consultation centers. In the coming weeks and months it will be Modena, Carpi, Ravenna, Cattolica and Bologna’s turn. The possibility for women to resort to pharmacological treatment for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy is thus being expanded: no longer only in hospital presidia, but also in family counseling centers, where it can be carried out in the case of women over the age of 49 within the 49th day of gestational age. In 2021, 62 percent of pregnancy terminations were done with drug therapy. “We are ready,” said Regional Health Councillor Raffaele Donini, “to set out to guarantee women an additional possibility to carry out, safely and with the appropriate assistance, the voluntary interruption of pregnancy We are starting in some cities, and then we will extend this modality to the other provinces as well, as the Ausl completes the preparation of the necessary protocols on spaces and modalities, based on the indications defined by the Region. We are convinced this is a right that must be guaranteed and with respect to which the health service must operate to the best of its ability.”

The issue has returned to the center of public debate after the right’s victory in the elections. In Liguria, FdI abstained during the vote on an agenda on “the right of women to choose voluntary interruption of pregnancy.”
