Enzo Tortora, one of Italy’s most popular television entertainers, escorted by Carabinieri (Italian para-military police) when he was arrested on June 17, 1983. In a magazine interview last week, Gianni “Il Bello” Melluso said he lied when he helped send Enzo Tortora to prison on charges of drug trafficking and criminal association. The admission came too late to help Tortora who died of lung cancer in 1988. The confession by the jailed criminal has again raised questions about the use of mobstersas informers. (Ap Photo)
